Comprehensive Statewide Solid Waste Plan "2025 Plan"

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has communicated to TRC that a new statewide solid waste plan is under development and seeks input from various stakeholder groups.

TRC's mission is to promote and increase recycling and waste diversion activities in Tennessee.  We have an opportunity to provide our voice to this process.  We would like to encourage our membership to attend the public participation meetings and listen to TDEC's proposals and help give voice to sound, environmental and economically friendly recycling policy.

For more information about the "2025 Plan" visit TDEC's website at:

The website has comment forms that can be submitted.  Please take some time and promote recycling in Tennessee by completing one of these forms and submitting it.

TRC Suggestions for the Comprehensive Statewide Solid Waste Plan (2025 Plan):

1.  Tennessee should provide more education on topics on how to reduce, reuse and recycle for the public.

2.  Tennessee should provide or expand recycling grants to counties, municipalities, industries, and schools.

3.  Tennessee should adopt a material usage hierarchy that incentivizes higher, beneficial options in materials management. This hierarchy should encourage the more desirable options other than landfilling like reuse, reducing waste, recycling, composting, etc.

4.  Tennessee should establish a goal to increase post-consumer recycling rate to 25% state wide by 2025.

5.  Tennessee should promote stronger partnerships within its state agencies and local governments.
